Dyson V15 Detect Review
The Dyson V15 Detect, which was a completely brand-new concept for Dyson with the slim laser fluffy head. This vacuum cleaner comes with a piezo sensor that counts and sizes the particles being sucked in real-time. It can adjust its mode based on the type of cleaning you are doing. The V15 Detect comes with a swappable battery, so the battery in here, as well as the spare battery that it comes with, each holds up to 60 minutes’ worth of charge time. Although the Dyson is one of the premium vacuum cleaners, it still lacks a self-emptying base and can be relatively heavy for extended use in handheld mode.
PROS:
- Great suction power
- Piezo sensors are very helpful.
- Comes with a swappable battery.
- Different modes for different types of cleaning.
CONS:
- Higher price point.
- Can be heavy in handheld mode.
- No self-emptying base.
Battery Life Of V15 Detect
The first thing I want to talk about is battery life because this is something that a lot of people are concerned about, you know, if companies make a move to a cordless vacuum, specifically a Dyson product. People ask questions like, are the batteries going to burn out? Are they really going to run that long? How does all of that work?Â
People having older Dyson models like the V6 or V8 say the battery life is barely there. Well, here’s what I’ll say to that: those are very old models, and they’re the baseline models. They don’t have swappable batteries, and battery technology has greatly changed from then until now.
Now, not only that Dyson vacuum, specifically the V15 Detect, comes with a swappable battery, so the battery in here, as well as the spare battery that it comes with, each holds up to 60 minutes’ worth of charge time, just like the Dyson V12, and when I’m done using the vacuum, it just goes right back on the dock to recharge. I also have the spare battery fully charged up so I can use this vacuum for up to two hours.
Sunction Power & Cleaning Performance
Obviously you’re buying a vacuum so that it will suck, and after a couple of years, a not-so-great vacuum tends to lose suction for one reason or another, so here’s what I can say after using this for two years, and quite frankly, I’m using it often.
The suction is still great. I don’t have to go over spaces, and when I vacuum, I don’t notice that there’s a trail of crap still left behind on the floor. When I vacuum, when I do a pass, the stuff is sucked up, and it’s done.
So a couple of concerns that people have with other vacuums or even, you know, if they’re researching a model like this, they want to know, is it going to lose suction as the battery life starts to taper out, like if you’re getting toward the end of the charge, or is it going to lose suction after a couple of years of use, which is a complaint I hear all the time about those less expensive vacuums? So here’s the thing: those vacuums, they’re going to lose suction; they don’t have the motor, technology, and filtration. This one does, and it stands the test of time.
Cleaning and Maintenance
I will say having a washable filter is so great; like, all I need to do is just run this under tap water and then leave it out to dry for 24 hours, and this thing is good to go. good as new, and that goes for the whole vacuum. You can actually handwash pretty much all of the non-electronic parts of this vacuum. It’s very easy to take apart all Dyson tools; you know the red buttons tell you where to press so that you can remove things. It’s very easy to remove the bins and the brushes to clean. You can clean the casings, but it’s not like I do or nearly as often as I should, but again, that’s a good sign; it means that I’m using it.
Laser Slim Fluffy Head
One of the features I absolutely love about the Dyson V15 Detect is its Laser Slim Fluffy Head. It’s new technology, and when I first heard about it, I was like, That’s so gimmicky. Then I tried it, and it is a game changer when it comes to vacuuming. Now I’ve talked to other people about it, and they’re like, Oh yeah, that laser on the Dyson is amazing. It is unanimous how amazing this feature is, so there’s a little laser, and you can flip it on.
When you use this tool, which is strictly for hard floors, it casts and scatters a laser light across the floor, and then what it does is it illuminates all of the dust and the dirt and the cat hair and all the little things that you might not see when you’re just regularly doing a pass with your vacuum, and even when you think your floor is clean, well, let me tell you, flick that laser on, and it tells you a whole different story. So the good thing is, like, it really helps you clean the entire space fully and completely and thoroughly, and this laser, of course, has never flickered; there have never been any issues with it; it always does its job.
Anti Tangle Screw Tool
When vacuuming for animals on older Dyson models, you had the mini motorized tool, which is what you would use to do smaller areas like upholstery steps. Vehicles, while they changed the way that their tool was designed so it’s now called the anti-tangle screw tool, which got this conical, tapered-shaped brush roll, so it’s motorized, meaning it hooks right up to your vacuum and it uses battery power.
The brush roll spins, and rather than allowing hair to get stuck in it, which is really hard when it comes to using a vacuum, the shape and the movement of this conical tool shoot string, hair, ribbon, or anything that you vacuum up on the floor right up into the canister without getting tangled. Again, this is something when you hear about it, you’re like, It’s gimmicky, but then as soon as you see it demonstrated, you know how great this feature is.
Piezo Sensor
Another really cool feature of the V15 Detect is the Piezo sensor, which is basically a listening device, and it sounds so crazy, but it’s really cool. It listens to the dirt that comes in, and by using the sound reverberations, it can actually detect the size of the particles that are coming into the bin.
Now, why is this important? Well, first of all, it tells you how clean or dirty this space is that you’re vacuuming, so it gives you a visual representation right there on the screen. You know when you see the big particles, the medium-sized particles, and the small-sized particles all firing at once, you know you’re vacuuming over a really dirty spot, and then as you vacuum and that area starts to get clean, you’ll see that the big and the medium-sized particles go away; then you’re just dealing with the small microscopic stuff, and once that stuff is gone, you know you can move on.
Auto-mode Adjustment
What’s great is that it doesn’t take long, typically just two or three passes over a very dirty area. Another fantastic feature is that if you leave the vacuum on medium mode, it automatically senses how dirty the area is through the Piezo sensor. Depending on that, it adjusts its power to maximize battery life. Therefore, if you are cleaning a very dirty spot, the vacuum will increase power and become louder as it transitions to Boost mode. Conversely, if you’re simply lightly cleaning a relatively clean spot, it remains quiet and transitions to Eco mode.
Tools & Attachments
This vacuum cleaner comes with several tools and attachments that we haven’t talked about yet. They are the soft dusting brush, which is really great for cleaning. Dusty areas, I mean, that’s why it’s got its name, right? You’re not going to clean a non-dusty area. It also has a heavy-duty dirt brush. What this can do, because it’s so firm, is kind of like wiggle into a dirty area, loosen up the dirt, and vacuum it up at the same time. Then you’ve got a little angled combo tool that kind of does the old in and out, and it allows you to get into dusty corners. You can move it out of the way and use it as a wide crevice tool, and then, of course the crevice tool. So these are tools that are kind of handy and make sense to have with any vacuum.Â
Final Thoughts
What’s amazing about Dyson is that they are constantly innovating. Every single time, I’m like, how can they top this vacuum? They do it again. You can check out the best Dyson vacuums for pet hair as well. So if you thought what I talked about with the V15 suited you and was awesome and exciting, the V15 is an amazing vacuum. It’s got incredible suction. Great bin capacity, swappable batteries The Laser Slim Fluffy Head has extraordinary filtration and a very strong motor. You’re getting great technology here. However, if you’re looking for some additional bells and whistles like the push-button start, HEPA filtration, and a larger bin size, you might want to look at the Gen 5. That being said, I have to tell you about all the Dyson vacuums that have come out so far besides the Gen 5. I love this one the most.
